Calling: no sound or the call fails

The other person can't hear you, the sound crackles, the microphone is blocked or the connection drops when calling from Hyre. How to fix it.

Written by Robin Alcedo Overbosch

What you see

One of these notices in the call window (Call in the sidebar): - Microphone access is blocked. Click the microphone or site-settings icon in your browser's address bar, allow microphone access, then try again. - The other person cannot hear you. Your microphone sends no sound. - We hear nothing from your microphone - No sound connection with the other person - Poor connection (amber), or Reconnecting - No answer, The line is busy or The call could not be connected. Check the number.

Or: the sound crackles, drops out, or the call breaks off on your phone.

The call window with the notice that the microphone is blocked

Why this happens

  • Your browser isn't allowed to use your microphone, or it uses the wrong microphone or speaker.

  • Another program is using your microphone (for example Teams or Zoom), or your headset came loose.

  • Your network is slow or blocks voice traffic, as some company or hotel networks do.

  • On your phone the browser stops sound as soon as you leave the app, lock the screen or another call comes in.

  • The number is wrong: no country code, a typo, or a special number.

How to fix it

Microphone blocked 1. Click the lock or microphone icon in your browser's address bar. 2. Set Microphone to Allow and refresh the page.

The other person can't hear you 1. Click Try again in the call window. Hyre opens the microphone again in the same call. 2. If that doesn't work, click Hang up and call again. 3. Under Microphone, pick the right microphone (your headset) and check that the level bar moves when you talk. Close other programs that use your microphone.

You can't hear the other person - Under Speaker, pick the right device and click Test.

Poor connection or crackling sound 1. Click Test my connection. Hyre makes a test call of about 15 seconds and says whether your connection is Good, Fair or Poor. If you see "Your network blocks direct audio", your network blocks voice traffic; try another network. 2. Call from a laptop with a headset rather than your phone. 3. Use a wired connection or sit closer to your wifi.

The call doesn't connect - Write the number with a country code: +31 6 ... or 0031 6 .... Hyre removes spaces, dashes and an extra 0 after the country code itself. - With No answer or The line is busy: the other person didn't pick up or was on another call. - You can call abroad, for example Belgium. Use that country's code (+32 ...). A foreign number keeps failing while a Dutch number works? Tell us through Helpdesk which country and which number.

On your phone - Stay in the app during the call. Hyre warns: "Do not leave the app during a call". - Don't take a second call during a Hyre call. When in doubt, call from your laptop.

Is it working again?

  • The level bar next to Microphone moves when you talk.

  • The call window shows Connection: Good.

  • After the call you see Call ended with Open conversation, and the call is in Conversations › Calls.

Prevent it

  • Call from your laptop with a headset.

  • Run Test my connection when you work from a new place.

  • Store numbers in your ATS with a country code (+31).

  • Note: a call without a recording or shorter than 5 seconds doesn't appear in Conversations. Hyre doesn't record WhatsApp calls.

Still not working?

Send us a message through the chat in Hyre (Helpdesk). Say what you see and since when, which number you called (country) and whether you were on a laptop or a phone.
