Why does my LinkedIn keep disconnecting?

The causes of a LinkedIn connection that keeps dropping (logging out, cookies, password, VPN, other tools) and how to prevent it.

Written by Robin Alcedo Overbosch

What you see

You regularly see Your LinkedIn connection has expired or Your LinkedIn account is disconnected at the top of Hyre, the LinkedIn card shows Needs Reconnect, or you get the email Your LinkedIn account is disconnected from Hyre. After reconnecting it works again, but a few days or weeks later it happens again.

Why this happens

Hyre uses the same LinkedIn session as your browser. The Chrome extension passes that session on; Hyre stores no password. Anything that ends that session in your browser also ends it for Hyre. The most common causes:

  1. You log out of LinkedIn in the browser you connected with. Even if you log straight back in: that is a new session, and the old one no longer works.

  2. Your cookies are cleared. By hand, by a setting such as "clear cookies on exit", by a privacy or cleanup tool, or because you connected from an incognito window.

  3. You change your LinkedIn password. LinkedIn then logs you out everywhere.

  4. You choose "Sign out of all sessions" in your LinkedIn settings.

  5. You use a VPN or travel to another country. LinkedIn then sees your account active in two places at once, and may ask for verification or end the session. Another city is usually fine, another country is not.

  6. You use another LinkedIn tool or extension on the same account, such as another automation tool. They fight over the same session and raise the chance of a LinkedIn check.

  7. You switch between LinkedIn accounts in the same browser profile, for example your own account and a company or colleague account. Logging in to one logs the other out.

  8. LinkedIn asks for an extra check: a verification code, a CAPTCHA or an approval in the LinkedIn app. Until you complete it, the session doesn't work.

  9. Your LinkedIn account has a warning or restriction. See LinkedIn warning or restriction: what now?.

How to fix it

  1. Open LinkedIn in the browser and browser profile you want to connect with (Chrome or Edge). Log in and complete any verification.

  2. Click Reconnect in Hyre, in the bar at the top or on the LinkedIn card under Settings › Channels. The full steps are in Reconnect LinkedIn.

  3. Find the cause in the list above and remove it, or it will happen again.

Is it working again?

  • The LinkedIn card shows Standard or Premium.

  • Your LinkedIn conversations are back in your Inbox.

  • Outreach shows no notice and your campaigns are running again.

Prevent it

  • Stay logged in to LinkedIn in your usual browser. Don't log out there.

  • Keep linkedin.com cookies. Turn off "clear cookies on exit", or make an exception for linkedin.com. Never connect from an incognito window.

  • Don't use "Sign out of all sessions", unless you think your account was taken over.

  • Changing your password? Reconnect right after.

  • VPN: turn it off for LinkedIn, or pick a server in your own country. Travelling abroad? Expect to reconnect.

  • One LinkedIn account per browser profile. Use a separate Chrome profile for a second account.

  • No other LinkedIn tools next to Hyre on the same account.
